Supplies (Math and Pre-Algebra)

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

It’s about time to start “back to school” shopping.  For the Pharaoh team all students are required to carry one 3-inch three ring binder divided into four sections - Science, Social Studies, Math (or Pre-Algebra), and Language Arts.  The binder should also include loose-leaf paper, a removable homework folder, and a zippered pouch with the following: pens (blue or black), pencils, erasers, sharpener, colored pencils, ruler, protractor, scissors, and glue.  Also, specifically for math and pre-algebra, students are required to have a composition journal to be kept in the classroom and a personal scientific calculator.  I strongly recommend the Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS.  (Click to view)  It says “Not Sold in Stores,” but I found it at the Nicholasville Road/Man O’ War Wal-mart for the same price as advertsied on-line.

Read Alouds in Math

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

When we were little we all (or hopefully, most of us) loved to listen to someone read out loud to us.  It may have been at home, church, or school, but I bet everyone has at least one memory of someone reading to them.  Unfortunately, by the time we reach middle school either 1) we think we are too cool to be read to or 2) the adults that did the reading think we are too old for it anymore.  I personally don’t believe either situation.  I still enjoy reading out loud to my students, and I enjoy listening to them read to me … and yes, this is still a math classroom!  I have come across a few books for our classroom library that involve math (some of them are pictured here), and I have had students write their own math books that are similar to those we share in class.  So, my lovelies, get ready for some creative reading and writing in math!!!

Also, for a quick listen from some of the books, click on the titles in “My Pages.”

A

Hi!  My name is Nickie Greer, and I am the seventh grade math and pre-algebra teacher on the Pharaoh team at Jessie Clark.  I am excited to get to meet each and every one of you - students and parents!  I hope the time for students spent in my classroom will either strengthen their love of math (for those who enjoy it) or help develop an appreciation for the subject (even if it is not a favorite).  If you ever want to contact me, please do!  I’d love to hear from you at nichole.greer@fayette.kyschools.us
