Filed under: General — mgiles at 7:07 pm on Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Happy Wednesday afternoon!  Although students usually bring home Wednesday folders, there was nothing to send home this week, so they will not be bringing one home today.

Math: Students worked on measuring length in inches and centimeters.  They then got into groups and measured the perimeter of a large sheet of paper in three different ways: a 12 in. ruler, a student’s foot, and a replica of Shaq’s foot.  They then talked about the difference between these three measurements.  Each student got to keep their Shaq foot so you can ask them about it! :) No HW!

Reading: Students finished filming their historical fiction skits and then they were watched and discussed as a class.  They also did lit circles for the last 15 minutes of class.  HW: Finish lit circle assignment (reading or worksheet, depending on your group)

Science: Students classified states of matter at various stations and explained why they knew it was a certain state.  No HW!

Writing: Students worked on completing their life after college essay or poem.  These have to be finished tomorrow! HW: Work on college essay or poem if writing time will not be enough for you to finish it tomorrow!

Social Studies: Students went on a virtual tour online of Fort Boonesborough.  They learned about various jobs and places within the fort and the significance of each.  No HW!

Friday!

Filed under: General — mgiles at 7:11 pm on Friday, February 26, 2010

Happy Friday everyone! I hope everyone had a relaxing snow day, but I am hoping for no more snow days.  With yesterday’s snow day, the last day of school is June 3.  Today we were on our review day schedule, so we were with our homeroom classes today.

We learned about real-world symmetry and slides, flips, and turns in Geometry.  Students made their own slide, flip, and turn diagrams and I am going to post them in the room.

To celebrate Black History Month, we read about Barack Obama and discussed the signifiance of the first African American (and Hawaiian) president.

We continued working on our life after college essays. Most of the students finished their rough drafts and they were awesome! We will work on revising them next week.

After lunch, we played reading board games that helped us learn about cause and effect, fact and opinion, and inferences.  Students then completed a self-assessment to discuss what they had learned.

We finished the afternoon with learning centers–two laptop centers to play educational science and grammar games, math tiles, and multiplication bingo.  The students loved this!

Have a great weekend!! :)

*Reading Mid-Term Grades

Filed under: General — mgiles at 12:41 pm on Friday, February 26, 2010

My reading class is the advanced class.  Students are held to a higher expectation than other classes and receive more advanced, higher-level work.  Grades did seem to be a bit lower this term than usual.  This is most likely due to low ORQ grades or low quiz grades.  Hopefully the students will begin to work more on their advanced level.
