Monday!

Hope everyone had a good weekend! The kids were so tired this morning…you must have worn them out this weekend! :)

*Valentine’s Day: the class party will be on Friday from 1:30-2:20.  You have received a paper asking to bring in an item for the sundae party.  I am also sending home a list of student names in our class.  If your child is bringing in valentine’s to pass out PLEASE make sure there is a valentine for each student.  Leaving students out will not be tolerated. 

Math: Today students learned more with fractions.  We used the fraction circles to learn about mixed numbers and improper fractions again.  Students did a great job.  We also practiced different ways to get mixed fractions and improper fractions.

Reading: Quest with Mrs. Ream

Science: Today we began our new weather unit.  Students searched through the newspaper weather page and found how to read it.
No HW

Writing: Today we worked more on our 6-Room poem.  They are really turning out to be great! :)

SS: Students worked on getting information ready to put into their Native American power points.

FRIDAY!!

Another fun day with my homeroom! :)

Today we worked a lot on Geometry.  We talked about 2D shapes, found the differences between a square and rectangle, congruent and similar figures, and found some symmetry. woo!

We also worked a lot on writing.  We wrote poems on pink paper for Valentine’s Day as well as worked more on our 6-Room Poem.

The kids also got to listen to Mary Wasson, a meteorologist and learn a little about weather and weather instruments. 

Students took time reading with their Book Buddies and taking a few AR tests.

 We also started our weekly Friday ‘Black History Month’ lessons.  I love these!! We learned about the Underground Railroad through an article (we tied in our knowledge of text features!) as well as comprehension questions, a poem by Walt Wittman, and I read the class Henry’s Freedom Box ~ awesome book and true story!

Math: Today we used fraction circles to learn about mixed numbers.  NO HW!

Reading: Continued with tall tales and participated in literature circles with Mrs. Hammer; NO HW!

Science: Health with Ms. Timaji

Writing: Writing groups to work on our 6 room poems; NO HW!

Social Studies: The students used Play-Doh to make mound carvings like Kentuckians did in the past.  They loved working with the Play-Doh and had fun sharing their mound carving with the class.  We also began researching in groups to begin our Native American PowerPoint presentations. NO HW!

**Homeroom: I forgot to mention I sent home the Feb. Book Log.  It has the student’s new Lexile number based on the Winter MAP test as well as the due date.

Math: Today students explored more fractions using circle fraction pieces.  We added and subtracted fractions as well as made up word stories! They are good!! :)  Students also began comparing and ordering fractions.

*I am still in need of some supplies if you are able to send any in! small personal pizza crusts, pizza sauce, shredded cheese
Also, if you would like to help me bake the fraction pizzas when we are finished with the lesson, please let me know and I will tell you when we are ready to do the activity!

Reading: Today we worked more on tall tales. Students and I read an Indian tale.  We discussed the problem and solution of the tale and then students worked on completing an ORQ on the tale.  Students also received their new Lit. Group assignments and chose books to read for the next several weeks.  Mrs. Hammer will be conducting the Lit. Groups with the students.
HW: complete ORQ if not in class, finish chapter from Lit. book and finish before/after sheet if not finished in class

Science: Students took their Earth-Sun Systems test today
No HW

Writing: Students worked on completing their rough draft of the 6-Room poem today.  They are really starting to sound great!
No HW

SS: We began KY early history today.  We discovered who the early Kentuckians were as well as how they got food and shelter.

Math: Students completed their tests and we began Fractions and Decimals unit.  Students worked with fraction pieces and found how to read and add fractions with like denominators.

Reading: Mrs. Hammer taught a lesson on Tall Tales through a webquest

Science: Students completed their study guides with Mrs. Hammer and played a science jeopardy review game. Please email me before 4 if you would like it to study with your child.

*Hope everyone had fun with the snow this weekend!

Math: Due to the hour delay, we decided to keep our schedule as ‘normal’ as we could and only had math for 30 minutes. Therefore, the kids did not get to finish their math test! They will complete tomorrow.
We still need materials if you are able to help!-pepperonis, shredded cheese, pizza sauce, and small round pizza crusts

Reading: Quest with Mrs. Ream

Science: Students studied about moon phases with Mrs. Hammer. Their test will be Wednesday and will be completing their study guide tomorrow in class.

Writing: Students worked hard in their writing groups to complete their organizer for the 6-room poem.

*If you are able to provide oreo cookies for Mrs. Hammer’s lesson please let me know!

Math: Today we started to play our review game for the test.  I was quite disappointed in how much the students have forgotten :(… so, we played the game for about 30 minutes and then made a new study guide for the last 30 minutes of class.  The questions are VERY similar to those that will be found on the test on Monday.
HW: complete the study guide, re-takes on Vocab test is scored a C or below is Monday

Reading: Today the students took their Watson’s test.  They did pretty well! Students also took their fables quiz and worked on Lexia

Science: Students learned about Seasons with Mrs. Hammer

Students received their science tests.  If your child got a Low B or lower, they can re-do the answers and turn into me no later than Monday.  PLEASE do not have your child mark out the wrong answer, just have him/her give the correct answer in a marker or crayon color so I can see. :)

*So sorry for not posting yesterday, I was absent.  The stomach flu is going around in a major way…yikes! :)

FYI:
*Science: Oreo cookies are needed for an upcoming science lesson with Mrs. Hammer. Please let me know if you are able to send any in by Friday. Thanks!
*Math: We have an upcoming math lesson on fractions.  Would anyone be able to provide the following supplies to help us make a ‘real-world’ connection?! small pizza crusts, shredded cheese, latex gloves, pepperonis, jalapenos.  Please let me know via email or note. Thanks!!
*Homeroom: Class Pictures on FRIDAY! :)

Math:  Today we worked more on possible outcomes.  Students used real-world events like packing clothes and making choices to see what all the possible outcomes were. Students also completed an ORQ, which is hanging in the hallway.  The Chapter 5 test was to be tomorrow, but because I was out and I felt as though we needed to cover more than what was in the Singapore texts, I am going to move the test to Monday. The vocab test will be tomorrow.  The kids completed their study guide yesterday for the test.
HW: study for the vocab test - if your child lost his/her words, please scroll down on the blog to last week and the words are still on the post.
*Students also found 100 ways to make 100 in honor of 100 days of being in school.

Reading: Today students continued to learn about fables.  Students used the laptops and Aesop’s interactive fables to determine traditional vs. modern ways of fables.  Students completed a Venn Diagram on the computer to help show the differences.
The Watson’s test will be tomorrow.

Science: Today students had Health with Ms. Timaji

Writing: I am so happy to say that EMMA’s poetry assessment was awesome! She will be helping the kids tomorrow with their assessments to help them understand it more and get a better grade.  We also did a few 100 days writing prompts. They were cute!

SS: Today we went on virtual tours of assembly lines and saw all 3 resources taking place.  We went on a tour of Toyota and the Crayola Factory.

The Economics test will be Tuesday.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!
*Homeroom: This weekend, Ty’s mom passed away unexpectedly.  I’ve spoken with the kids but any conversations at home about this will help.  We are going to be making cards for Ty as well.
*We also got a new student in our homeroom ~ Megin.  All the kids were very welcoming and excited!
*Science: Mrs. Hammer (my student teacher) is teaching a 2 week unit on Earth-Sun Systems.  She is in need of oreo cookies for an activity.  If you are able to send some in, please let me know. We’d like to have them by Friday of this week so she will know how many more to purchase. Thanks!

Math: Today students were taught how to answer word problems with mean, median, mode, probability, and outcomes.  Students did pretty well.
No HW
The test will be this Thursday.

Reading: Quest with Mrs. Ream~interrupted with the H1N1 Flu Shot

Science: Students learned about simple truths about the earth and sun systems.  They used a model to depict why the sun rises and sets, why we have seasons, and day and night.

Writing: Students took a Poetry Assessment.
HW: complete Poetry Assessment if not

SS: Today we talked about assembly lines.  Students used words like scarcity, demand, product, specialized stores, etc.  Then we had our own assembly lines with ice cream! Thank you to those of you who were able to provide items for this! The students learned a lot about the production, everyone having one specific job, and not arguing!! :)
